Barbara T. Zimmerman, Ph.D., President

Barbara Zimmerman received her Ph.D. in Pathology from UCHSC. She conducted post-doctoral level research for many years before switching her career to medical writing and communication in 1997. She has been a member of AMWA-RMC since 1998 and completed an AMWA Multi-disciplinary Core Curriculum Certificate. Dr. Zimmerman served as secretary of AMWA-RMC for several years and president for 2006-2007. She has often represented the chapter at the Annual Conference. She has returned to her small freelance business, Biomedical Communication and Consulting, after working part time for several years as a Project Coordinator at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry. Her primary responsibility was to implement a grant she wrote for enhancing the research infrastructure of the school. Her book, Understanding Breast Cancer Genetics, was published by the University Press of Mississippi in 2004. As president, Dr. Zimmerman oversees and coordinates the Chapter's activities and reports these activities to the national headquarters. She also serves as an "ambassador" for the Chapter throughout the Rocky Mountain Region.

With a master of science in public health and bachelor's degrees in biology and English, Karen specializes in communicating health information to both professionals and to the public. She writes, designs and edits content for instructional materials in a variety of formats including modules, fact sheets, newsletters and articles. Additionally, her skill set includes data analysis and the writing and editing of manuscripts before submission to scientific journals. She has overseas experience in West Africa as a Peace Corps Volunteer where she worked in natural resource management and studied French and Fulani. Her areas of expertise include nutrition, physical activity, cancer, obesity and maternal and child health. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in public health from the University of Utah Department of Family and Preventive Medicine with a focus on health communication. As Education Director, she will plan and coordinate the annual chapter conference.
